If you are a person who prays, please pray today for the 150 – 200 kids who just arrived on three buses at Homestead Detention Center. Pray that someone will be there to show them kindness and compassion, even though the rules for employees seem to be designed to prevent that. Pray that the kids will realize that they are now beyond the reach of the people at home who would do them harm, or even kill them. Pray that there are enough beds for each of them to have a place to sleep, even if the bathrooms are unsanitary and there are areas that have a heavy mildew smell; even though the 17-year-olds sleep 144 in a room, and the younger kids sleep 12 in a room. Pray that they will be able to cope with the extreme loneliness and sadness that will surely overtake them all tonight after lights out at 10:00 P.M., when they aren’t allowed to talk to anyone, and the staff members are not allowed to comfort them. Pray that their stay will be relatively short, and that no permanent psychological or physical harm results from the trauma of being jailed away from family members after the trauma of having to flee their homes. Pray that our nation wakes up from this nightmare and returns to acting like the America we knew before.
