06 June, Witness Lisa J. Ehlers McCuller reports

I have unfortunately not been as active the last few weeks due to professional and personal obligations. But I wanted to share something that came out of a training I have been in this week.

The words on the image are some from newcomers (people who have been in US less than two years) that describe how they feel until they begin to make connections with peers and teachers, family, in the community… in their new country.

The words that stood out to me were angry, rejected, depression.

Now take away the ability to visit with family and peers. Place them in classrooms where teachers have no background knowledge of your language or culture. Place them in classrooms where teachers may not even want you here in this country. Take away the only opportunity to play a common game of fútbol with your new friends.

That is how I imagine life in Homestead Detention Center to be.
